Galerie Arndt & Partner
The Galerie Arndt + Partner, one of Germany's leading young galleries for contemporary art, was in search of new premises capable of handling its increased exhibition activities.
The requirements which the new gallery was to meet were identified and elaborated in dialogue with the gallery owners and artists. The overriding aim was to create open, readily adaptable spaces for exhibitions and presentations of painting, photography, sculpture and video. Artists were to be allowed as much space as possible to be able to construct large-scale installations. However, the architecture of the gallery itself was to be on the reticent side, leaving the focus unambiguously on the encounter between viewer and artwork.
The result was a platform for new art, more accurately a stage set, which afforded artists of the calibre of Sophie Calle and Thomas Hirschhorn the scope to exhibit with unprecedented versatility and tendency to intervene with the space.
